A MapFiend Quick Play round: a country outline with a difficulty setting and four name options

Eight countries. How hard do you want them?

HOW IT WORKS

How Quick Play works

  1. Pick your difficultyEasy, Medium or Hard. The harder the setting, the less help on screen and the less familiar the countries.
  2. A country appearsOne outline at a time, eight in a run.
  3. You name itChoose from the options given, or type the answer yourself on Hard. Difficulty and speed both feed your points.
  4. Play all eight throughA wrong answer just moves you on to the next country. No lives, no early endings, always a full run.

THE MECHANICS

How Quick Play is scored

The same engine as every MapFiend mode: each country carries a base score set by how hard it is to place, and answering quickly adds a speed bonus. Difficulty changes what you face. Easy and Medium serve friendlier shapes with options to choose from, while Hard pulls from the obscure end of the map and makes you type the answer yourself, the same input Conquest uses. Eight countries, done in a couple of minutes, and every difficulty keeps its own board.

GET BETTER

Three things that help

Start on MediumEasy is for finding your feet, and Medium is where the interesting shapes start. Move up when you clear a clean eight.
Treat Hard as Conquest trainingSame typed input, same unfamiliar countries, but no clock and no lives. It is the gentlest place to practice the hardest skill.
Make it a habit next to the DailyA Daily set and a Quick run is five minutes a day, and it is the fastest route to recognising shapes on sight.

THE BOARD

Where you land

Every Quick Play run is scored and ranked, and Easy, Medium and Hard each keep their own board, so you are always compared against players who took the same challenge. Each month is a fresh board, your best run of the month holds your place, and the all-time boards keep the best runs ever.

FAQ

Quick Play questions

What is Quick Play?

A fixed run of eight country outlines at a difficulty you choose. No lives and no clock, so every run plays all eight countries, and your score lands on that difficulty's board.

What changes with the difficulty?

The countries and the help. Easy and Medium serve better-known shapes with options to pick from and more context on screen. Hard draws from the countries most people cannot place and you type the answer yourself.

How long does a run take?

A couple of minutes. Eight countries, no clock, no waiting.

Do wrong answers end the run?

No. There are no lives in Quick Play. A miss moves you to the next country and you always finish the set.

Is Quick Play a good first mode?

It is the best one. Short runs, difficulty you control, and the same scoring as the rest of the game, so nothing you learn is wasted when you step up to the Daily or the endless modes.

Is it free?

Yes. Quick Play is free in your browser on phone or desktop, no download needed.
