What is MapFiend?
MapFiend is a free browser game where you guess the country from its outline. A single country's shape appears on the map and you name it. It plays on phone or desktop and includes a daily set that is the same for everyone, two endless modes, and a quick eight country round.
Is MapFiend free?
Yes. MapFiend is free to play in your browser, with no download and no account required. You can create an account to save progress and appear on the leaderboards, but every mode is playable without one.
How is MapFiend different from GeoGuessr?
GeoGuessr drops you into street view and asks where you are. MapFiend shows you a country's outline and asks which country it is. There is no street view and no panning around, so rounds are much shorter and it tests map knowledge rather than reading visual clues from photographs.
Is there a daily geography game like Wordle?
Yes. The MapFiend Daily gives every player the same set of countries each day, with one attempt and no retries. Sets run five to eight countries and take a couple of minutes. Scores go on that day's leaderboard, so you can compare your result against everyone who played the same set.
Do I need to download anything?
No. MapFiend runs entirely in your browser on phone, tablet or desktop, so there is no app to install and nothing to update. You can start playing straight away, and an account is optional rather than something you need before your first round.
Is MapFiend suitable for adults?
Yes. MapFiend is built for adults who want a real geography challenge rather than a classroom drill. The harder modes remove on screen help entirely and draw on countries most people cannot place, while the easier settings stay approachable if you are learning.
How many countries are in MapFiend?
MapFiend covers 187 countries. Difficulty is set per country, so widely recognised shapes are worth fewer points than the ones almost nobody can name, and harder modes draw more heavily on the less familiar end.
How is my score calculated?
Points scale with the country's difficulty and how quickly you answer, with bonuses for building a streak, so a short accurate run can outscore a longer careless one. Points decide your leaderboard position in every mode, including Conquest. Conquest additionally awards a conqueror title based on how many countries you took.
